Creative Commons–Guilt-Free Resources

Creative common is an alternative license that lets artist who create stories, movies, music, and images decide how their work can be shared and used by others. Instead of a traditional copyright (which reserves ALL rights to the product), creative commons lets you, the artist, decide what can and cannot be done with your work.

As a user, creative commons helps you to find media that you can use without worrying about breaking laws–and being fined/arrested. You can find artists who are ok with you using their pictures and music in your presentation for free. There are movie makers who welcome you taking their films and remixing them into your own show. It’s just a matter of finding the media and checking the license!

FRONTLINE: growing up online

frontlineguo.jpg

PBS’s Frontline recently devoted a show to examining how the Internet is shaping and transforming our youth. The entire show is available online. One thing I love about Frontline online is that they break a show down into “chapters”, so you don’t have to devote an entire evening to watching the show. The site also gives you an opportunity to share your own thoughts and read others. Additional interviews with teachers and teens are available. Also, you will find some great suggestions on how to parent children in the age of the Internet.

Check out a chapter or two by following the link below and clicking on “Watch the full program”, and feel free to share your reactions and reflections by clicking the comments link at the top of this post (under the title of the post).

Presentations: More than a Power Point!

sed031.jpg

How many times has a presenter stood in front of you with a Power Point projected onto the screen full of notes too hard to read and nearly impossible to take notes on? Some would call this Power Point abuse. Others would roll their eyes and fall asleep. Luckily, you know better. You watch “presentations” all the time when you are at the movies or watching TV. Advertisements are just very fast, powerful presentations. Are they filled with texts and cute clip art? No, they contain images, music, and a spokesperson all working to get you to buy their product.

Keep this in mind as you create your Power Point presentations. A Power Point is meant to punch home important points in your speech. It is not a script that you read to your audience. Below are two links to help you create a presentation that gets your message across to your viewers.

The Basics of Power Point: A set of links that explain how to format a slide, change the background, insert clip art, animations, movies, and sound clips, as well as customizing transitions.
